Definition: What is "Anhidrosis"?

ANHIDROSIS

Anhidrosis is the inability to sweat normally that can eventually lead to overheating of the body which can be very fatal. Anhidrosis can be quite difficult to diagnose & often goes unrecognized. There are a number of factors that can cause this medical condition & treatment would usually depend on the underlying cause.

Symptoms & Signs

The primary sign of anhidrosis is the inability to sweat or sweating only in patches. Sometimes the unaffected areas compensate by producing too much perspiration. Other symptoms include dizziness, muscle cramps, flushing & little or no perspiration as well as heart palpitations.

Causes

There are a number of possible causes of this medical condition such as nerve damage, skin damage, effects of certain medications, genetic factors & dehydration.

Diagnosis

Doctors are likely to diagnose anhidrosis based on the signs & symptoms. Other laboraty tests can also be conducted such as the quantative sudomotor axon reflex test, silastic sweat imprint & thermoregulatory sweat test.
